  • UPDATE: CDOT hoping to have I-70 lanes reopened today
GLENWOOD SPRINGS - Colorado Department of Transportation geologists returned from the rock mitigation site on Wednesday evening and were satisfied with the work that was accomplished.

According to a news release Wednesday night, CDOT officials are expecting to open traffic lanes later today through Glenwood Canyon.

Crews blasted the rock they were concerned with and there was a clean break from the slope. All the rocks that officials were concerned about were knocked down from the area above Interstate 70.

As a result, mitigation work will not be required...
  • The RFTA land grab attempt
I could hardly believe my eyes a month ago when I read the article in this newspaper headed "Road option out for railroad corridor." Where does the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority get the idea that it has the right to play "dog-in-the-manger" with the portion of the railroad corridor that lies within the city of Glenwood Springs and prohibit Glenwood Springs from ever using any portion of the corridor to deal with its future transportation needs? RFTA needs to recognize that it is only one member of the Roaring Fork Railroad Holding...

    Vote the bums out
This is in response to the letter from New Castle.
I hope we vote out everyone in Congress when the election rolls around. Unfortunately, one of those that have been paid by the banking lobbyists is Senator Michael Bennet. He wants to be re-elected. Don't vote for someone that has already been paid off. Not sure if he has taken money from other lobbyists, but I do know that he has taken money from the banking industry. One of Obama's promises was to get rid of the lobbyists in Washington. He has not...
  • When it comes to nutrition, your plate should look like a rainbow
NEW CASTLE, Colorado - People who exercise regularly to improve health and lose weight may benefit from a registered dietitian, who can help clients develop personalized eating plans. Registered dietitians assure nutritional adequacy and address lifestyle, environment, habits, family dynamics, and health conditions. For clients training for a specific event, a registered dietitian with expertise in sports nutrition can customize the nutritional plan specific to the sport.
A registered dietitian is a health care professional who has completed a nutrition-related degree. All dietitians must pass a national board examination before receiving the R.D. credentials. They must complete...
  • Readers Say Thanks
Heritage Park gave my dad great care
It is with enormous gratitude that I write this letter. In April 2009, I moved my Dad, Ferd Schiavi, a 90-year-old East Coast resident of New York City and Washington, D.C., to Heritage Park Care Center in Carbondale. When he arrived, I heard him tell a friend on the phone, "My daughter moved me to Kansas, or wherever the heck I am. ..."
His health was fragile at best, but the 24-hour care and therapy he received at Heritage Park allowed him to reclaim his health and independence. Within...
  • I-70 detour is making Steamboat a busy town
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colorado - Over-the-road trucks rumbled through Steamboat Springs in greater numbers than usual Tuesday afternoon, but civic leaders were looking out a month to the scheduled repaving of Lincoln Avenue/U.S. Highway 40.
The major highway that runs through Ski Town USA was designated one of two detours for Interstate 70 this week in the wake of a large rock slide that closed the four-lane highway in Glenwood Canyon. The slide occurred at about midnight Sunday.
"People are wondering if the closure will last through April 5," said Tracy Barnett, of Mainstreet Steamboat Springs.
    That's the...
