  • Workers breaking up boulder above I-70 in Glenwood Canyon
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Workers are breaking up a huge boulder threatening to tumble down a cliff onto Interstate 70 in western Colorado after a rock slide that closed the highway indefinitely.
State officials say they hope to dislodge the boulder Wednesday and then decide when they can reopen some lanes.
The boulder is 20 feet in diameter and 900 feet above the highway. Workers will break it apart with compressor-powered drills hauled to the site by helicopter.
A 17-mile stretch of I-70 has been closed since Monday after the slide rained boulders onto the road...
  • The risks of mountain living
    Somebody explain this one.
Boulders as large as tractor-trailers fall from Glenwood Canyon onto I-70 near Hanging Lake early Monday morning. And the damage is done. The largest boulder is a ridiculous 66 tons. That's a lot of elephants. Unbelievably, there were no injuries or damaged automobiles.
    What are the chances?
They seem slim, but then again it was midnight. So those chances go up a bit when the canyon goes dark in March. I've driven Glenwood Canyon many times late at night, and early in the morning, returning from Vail or...

  • Closure slowing food deliveries
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado - Despite the more-than-200-mile detour to bypass the Glenwood Canyon, deliveries to local stores were only a little behind schedule due to the rock fall that had Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon closed Monday and Tuesday.
The 17-mile section of I-70 remains closed to traffic from Dotsero to Glenwood Springs.
According to Safeway director of public affairs Kris Staaf, the detour pushed delivers back only a little bit, but Glenwood customers do not have to worry about out-of-stock items due to the slide.
"We have adjusted our travel schedules," Staaf said. "These things happen...
  • Is Cottonwood Pass the solution to this situation?
EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado - Brad Higgins has been wary of Glenwood Canyon since Interstate 70 opened all four lanes through it more than 16 years ago. It didn't help matters when Higgins' truck was hit by a falling rock in the canyon last week.
Higgins, the director of the Eagle County Road and Bridge Department, is a believer in creating an emergency detour route to the canyon over Cottonwood Pass. But he also knows, perhaps better than anyone else, what a project like that might mean in the long run.
In the wake of a massive rockslide...
